【Essay Questions for January 2015】: INSEAD

前回のエントリーではJob Description Essayを更新しましたが、今回は別のEssay課題のご案内となります。

Essay-1:
Give a candid description of yourself (who are you as a person), stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary. (600 words max.)

Essay-2 :
Describe the achievement of which you are most proud and explain why. In addition, describe a situation where you failed. How did these experiences impact your relationships with others? Comment on what you learned. (400 words max.)

Essay-3 :
Tell us about an experience where you were significantly impacted by cultural diversity, in a positive or negative way. (300 words max.)

Esasy-4 :
Describe all types of extra-professional activities in which you have been or are still involved for a significant amount of time (clubs, sports, music, arts, politics, etc). How are you enriched by these activities? (300 words max.)

Essay-5 :
Is there anything else that was not covered in your application that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee? (300 words max.)

Please give a full description of your career since graduating from university. It should be written as if you were talking to someone at a social gathering detailing your career path with the rationale behind your choices. Discuss your short and long term career aspirations. (350 words max.)

【Essay Questions for January 2015】: LBS (Sloan Masters in Leadership & Strategy)

LBS Sloan Masters in Leadership and Strategyプログラムのエッセイ課題になります。スクール側の意図を理解するためにも、課題に続くInstructionパートもご一読ください。

  1. How will the Sloan Leadership and Strategy degree enhance your immediate and ultimate professional and personal objectives:  (500 words)
  2. Describe the hardest professional decision you have made and its impact on the situation, any teams involved and on yourself (500 words)
  3. Drawing on your experience in your function and/or sector please give your opinion on question (a) or b) (300 words)a) Will increasing regulation really mitigate risk? Do you think that this is desirable?b) What do you see as the key issues for the next 5 years in your sector and/or region?
  4. Optional Statement: What question would you most like to be asked, and why? (200 words max)

Instructions: The Admissions Committee will consider your answers to these questions as part of the admissions process.  The first two questions are designed to highlight your achievements, objectives and experience as a decision maker. INSEADの2015年1月入学コースの出願締切日が発表されました。

・Round 1: March 21, 2014

・Round 2: May 28, 2014

・Round 3: July 25, 2014

Competition for each round is relatively equal regardless of the intake or round you apply for. We review the pool of applications submitted within each round independently, keeping the “offer ratio” (percentage of candidates accepted vs. applications received) fairly constant across all rounds.

MBA入学審査官が求めるものとは?

2015年入学を目指す多くの出願者にとって、この時期は「一日も早い目標スコアの獲得を目指し、TOEFLやIELTSを中心とするテスト対策に集中している時期かと思います。そうした隙間時間を作りながら、少しずつ入学審査関連の情報も収集して欲しいという(私の)希望もあり、今回の投稿ではWall Street Jounralの記事で取り上げられた、Columbia, MIT (Sloan), そしてUniversity of Southern Califronia (Marshall)の入学審査官による座談会の様子”What Business Schools Want“を紹介させていただきます。

学位の選択:自分に相応しい学位は修士号 or 博士号?

大学院留学を考える出願予定者から寄せられる相談には、「自分のキャリアを踏まえると、どちらが適していると思いますか?」といった内容が含まれることがあります。そうした折のアドバイスとしは、卒業後の目標(Short-Term Goal)を達成するために必要な専門知識の幅と深さ、スキルの内容、経験の有効性、更には(将来の)キャリアパスの中における取得学位の役割や意味づけを考えてもらいます。

例えば経済学のような学問を修め、実際の現場で活躍されている多くは経済学博士の学位を取得済みの方々です。そして同分野における修士号は、むしろTerminal Degreeと位置づけられる傾向にあります。大学やシンクタンク等で研究を続けるにしろ、キャリアに対する信用付けという観点からは、博士号取得がより望ましい分野であると言えます。

Non-Terminal Degreeの場合、修士課程のカリキュラムが博士課程への準備期間として、必要最低限の知識と研究対象分野をより論理的に考察する能力を鍛えることを目的とするケースが挙げられます。もしくは修士号自体が存在せず、博士課程へ直接進学するプログラム構成もみられます。その際には、何かの理由で同課程を修了できなかった学生に(各プログラムが定めた履修条件を満たしていれば)Terminal Degreeとして修士号を授与されることがあります。

修士号の取得までに費やす月日は2年が一般的ですが、近年における経済や就職事情を考え、米国の大学院では1年プログラム(One-year program)が増設されるなどの動きが出ています。その一方で、博士号の場合は平均で7年前後はかかると言われています。研究費や生活費の捻出のため、コースワークや試験が修了した後に働き始める研究生も多数いるものの、研究の進捗が遅れ、志半ばで退学するケースも少なくはありません。学力や研究するための実践、応用力、創造力などを兼ね備えたとしても、意志の強固さや継続力に見られるメンタル面の強さが求められということになります。

修士課程のカリキュラムは体系立っており、学ぶべき期待値と提供される教育コンテンツが把握しやすい点が特徴です。かたや博士課程のカリキュラムは、その研究内容にも独自性が求められます。博士課程への留学を考えているのであれば、少なくとも現時点で取り上げたい研究テーマ、それをどの程度まで掘り下げて研究を継続していく青写真は持ち続けて欲しいと思います。

出願書類を提出した後で面接試験対策へと備えるMBA出願者はまだしも、面接対策も出願条件に含まれておらず、後は結果発表を待つことが課せられた主にM.A. or M.S.プログラム等への出願者の中には、”モヤモヤ”、もしくは”ソワソワ”とした感覚と向き合っている方々はいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。既に約20年近くに遡りますが、出願者として私もそうした経験の持ち主です。そうした心境を接するかのごとく、Tufts University, Fletcher SchoolのAdmissions Blog.に、” I’ve submitted my application.  Now what?”と題した記事が投稿されていましたので、この場にて紹介させていただきます。

結局のところは、6番目の項目に述べられている

キャンパス訪問

2nd Rdでの出願も終えた出願者の方々からは、インタビュー対策と同時にキャンパス訪問に関する相談をも受ける時期となりました。これまでは、テストやエッセイを中心とした出願書類対策を中心に考えてきましたが、ここからはインタビューやキャンパス訪問を中心とする準備を推し進めていくことになります。

心構えと準備

先日、東洋経済オンライン用サイトから、下記の記事が目に入ってきました。それは、昨シーズン、Boston Red SoxをWorld Championへと導いた上原浩治投手の野球人生を総括する内容でした。野球好きの私にとっては、終始興味深く、その節々にて「なるほど」と頷きながら読み進めていきました。

そしてこの記事の最終パートに至ったところです、「アメリカで戦い続けるモチベーションは何なのか」の問いに対して、上原投手は以下のように述べています。

「汚い話になりますけど、先発ピッチャーとか野手の給料がとんでもなく高いんで、僕らどんだけいい成績おさめようが絶対かなわないことなんで。でも、グラウンドに立てば全然関係ない、みんな同じ条件。絶対に負けたくないですね」

⇒上原投手の「絶対に負けたくない」という気持ちは、マウンドにあがるまでの準備にも余念を与えることなく、常にベストなパフォーマンスを発揮することのみに注力する、メンタル面の強さがその言葉からは漲っています。ことMBA受験の現場に置き換えてみますと、書類審査を通過し、面接試験の案内を受け取り、「これから!」という時に、「自分の英語力は大したことないですが、大丈夫しょうか?」といった類の相談を投げかけてくる方々と上記の言葉を共有したいと思います。さらに私が指導経験から伝えられることは、「実践的な練習を重ねることで、そうした不安感を取り除く」ことに尽きます。そのためにも、「絶対に合格するため」限られた時間の中で最善の面接対策準備を実施することに注力していきましょう。

そして、上原投手に関する記事は下記内容へと続きます。

<中略>自分で限界を作らない、上原はそう繰り返す。目の前の敵に、過去の自分に、そして年齢による限界説に勝ち続けたい。「自分のピッチングはまだ完成していないし、常にまだ自分には伸びしろがあると思っています。やめた時が、自分の最高の時と思っていますから」

⇒「この程度でいいかと決めた瞬間に成長の余地が失われてしまう」と謂わんばかりの強固な心構えが伝わってきます。皆さんが留学を志した背景の一つには、「成長の余地」を自己認識した経験が土台になっていると思います(特にWhy I need an MBA degreeに対する回答内容)。そしてこれからのインタビューの場/機会を通じ、そうした「伸び代」を存分に伸ばせる可能性(ポテンシャル)を面接官とシェアしていきましょう。
