Dual-Degree Programs for Globally Minded Students

This fall, five top business schools are launching the M2M, a portfolio of double degrees giving recent university graduates the opportunity to complete two master’s degrees by attending two top business schools in two different countries over two years.

This initiative is an effort by leading business schools on multiple continents to meet the demands of a globalized economy and provide future business leaders with a distinctive learning experience that will accelerate their careers.

http://www.hec.edu/News-Room/Press-Releases/Five-Top-Business-Schools-Announce-a-Portfolio-of-Dual-Degree-Master-s-Programs-for-Ambitious-Globally-Minded-Students

The M2M programs are a collaboration among five schools: FGV Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo, HEC Paris, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School (HKUST), Sauder School of Business University of British Columbia, and the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM).

The five participating schools are all members of the Global Network for Advanced Management, a network of top business schools committed to educating global leaders through collaboration and innovation.

Six M2M double degrees are available as of September 2017 for student applications: FGV-Yale, HEC-FGV, HEC-HKUST, HEC-Yale, HKUST-Yale, and Sauder-Yale. After they complete both academic years, students will graduate with two master’s degrees, one from each school they attended. Graduates will be alumni of both schools and will have access to the schools’ career resources.

This innovative program gives ambitious students an unparalleled advantage by grounding them in the distinctive academic cultures and approaches of two top business schools in different countries, while preparing them for global roles. Students get the chance to study alongside peers from all continents with diverse experiences. They will benefit from curricular and extracurricular collaborations among the schools, highly personalized career services, and the networks of two global business schools.

David Bach, Deputy Dean at Yale SOM, says that the M2M is all about choice: “Whatever pathway students choose, young leaders who are interested in having impact throughout their careers will quickly develop skills that set them apart in the global marketplace, while building a deep network of like-minded peers around the world. The world needs more globally minded leaders, not fewer, and with this initiative we seek to positively impact organizations confronting challenging issues at the nexus of business and society.”

Peter Todd, Dean of HEC Paris, says, “The innovation here is to go to the market with a range of world class academic partners sharing joint admission processes and aiming at recruiting together a significant number of students. We are convinced that this offer meets the demand of growing numbers of extremely talented and globally-mobile students who target prestigious double degree programs as passports for international careers.”

LL.M. applications are processed through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) LL.M. Applicant Services. LL.M. applications for the 2018-19 academic year will be available starting in late-October and due by March 1, 2018 for priority consideration.

All applicants must register for the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (LL.M. CAS). Applicants with a foreign law degree will also need to register for the International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service.

Applicants with a foreign law degree must demonstrate English proficiency by taking a language test. Applicants are exempt from this requirement if they hold a law degree from a school in: Australia, Canada (outside Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa (English medium universities) or the United Kingdom.

An applicant whose first degree in law was taught in English in another country may apply for an exemption from this requirement by submitting an official letter from their law school/university verifying that English was the medium of instruction. Students who request and are granted an exemption are expected to be fully competent English speakers and will not be eligible for extended time on their final exams.

UCLA Anderson talks

http://mbablogs.anderson.ucla.edu/mba_admissions/2017/08/ucla-anderson-application-insider-which-round-to-apply-in.html

The pros and cons of each round below may help you determine which is the best round for you. That said, please remember that the relative competitiveness of each round varies, as the applicant pool changes from year to year.

APPLYING ROUND 1

Pros: In Round 1, all seats are available (for UCLA Anderson, that’s about 360 in our full-time MBA class) so we have room to admit all of the qualified candidates that we come across.  Further, in Round 1 we have the full amount of merit-based fellowship funds left to distribute.  Applying early can also show the Admissions Committee that you’re serious about attending our business school.  There is also still the opportunity to be put on the waitlist to be potentially re-evaluated in Rounds 2 and/or 3. And if you do not get accepted into our program, you will likely have have sufficient time to apply to another school’s program in their later rounds.

Cons: Applicants may feel rushed to complete their application by a Round 1 deadline.  Without proper time management, individuals may not allot sufficient time to put together the highest quality application that they are capable of, and therefore may run the risk of hurting their chances for acceptance into our program.  Having insufficient time to self-reflect on short- and long-term goals, do research on MBA programs, and write the essay response may be evident on the application to the Admissions committee (especially the essay). Further, if you have not given sufficient time for your recommenders to complete their letters of recommendation, the quality of those crucial elements of the application may also be compromised.  You also will have the least amount of time to complete your GMAT/GRE and TOEFL/IELTS exams, and without proper planning, will likely not have time to re-take the exams if you’re not satisfied with your first score.

APPLYING ROUND 2

Pros: Round 2 is the most popular round for applicants here at UCLA Anderson, with a majority of our applications received in this round. By applying in Round 2, you have additional time to complete your application and write your essay; plus your recommenders also have more time to finish their recommendations.  If you aren’t happy with your score on the GMAT/GRE and/or TOEFL/IELTS, you will likely also have time to re-take the exam (we only evaluate your top score). Possibly the greatest advantage of applying in Round 2 is that you have more time to learn about our program by attending Admissions events. Perhaps you can even schedule a campus visit to meet with current students and observe a class! By having this time to get first-hand experience on our program, you may gain a better understanding of your own school preferences and MBA goals, all which will reflect in your application.

Cons: We receive the largest number of applications during Round 2, so competition is high (especially since we also have Round 1 waitlisted candidates still under consideration).  If you do not get accepted (which hopefully won’t be the case!) you may not have sufficient time to apply to another program within the same academic year.

APPLYING ROUND 3

Pros: Perhaps the biggest benefit in applying in Round 3 is that you have the most time to enhance your application profile — the additional time may allow you to get a promotion at work, take on a new project, and/or get involved in more leadership activities, for example. With more time to self-reflect on your goals, the application, and the essay question, applying in Round 3 may give you the advantage of giving you the most amount of time to put together the highest quality application possible for you. If you applied to other programs in earlier rounds, you will likely also be equipped with acceptance information from those schools. You will also have ample time to take (and potentially re-take) the GMAT/GRE and/or TOEFL/IELTS exams.

Cons: Since our class size is capped, fewer applicants are historically admitted in the last round simply due to the availability of spots in the class.  This makes this round the most competitive out of all. While you can still be placed on our waitlist, there are still likely many other individuals from earlier Rounds on our waitlist that you’ll be still compared against.

https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXLASGM19H1G_Z10C17A9000000/

University of Chicago

University of Chicago, LL.M.
https://www.law.uchicago.edu/llm/dates

December 15Priority application submission deadline. On or before this date candidates should have submitted their Basic Information Form electronically to the Law School and the following items to the LSAC LLMCAS: application for admission, personal statement, and resume.  Candidates may apply after December 15. They do not need to ask permission to do this. They should understand, however, that they assume the risk that most admission decisions will have been made by the time their applications have been completed and reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee. Candidates who do apply after December 15 should include with their personal statements an explanation about why they did not apply before the deadline.

January 15Priority application completion deadline. Although most applicants will have completed their applications (application for admission, personal statement, resume, transcripts, TOEFL/IELTS scores, and letters of recommendation) by the December 19 deadline, candidates whose applications are completed between December 15 and January 15 will receive full application review before decisions are sent out on February 15. Applications completed after January 15 will be fully reviewed once they are complete, but those candidates should understand that, as a practical matter, the later we review a completed application, especially if it is substantially later, the less likely we will be able to offer admission. This timing varies from year to year, and it is impossible to predict ahead of time when we will have to stop offering admission to candidates.
