LLM Credential Assembly Serviceの準備

この8月は、LLMを目指す受験生にとっても１つのターニングポイントになります。これまでTOEFLに焦点を絞った対策を取られてきた中で、そろそろ出願書類の作成準備にも意識を向ける時期へと差し掛かってきます。

そこで、まずはLLM Credential Assembly Serviceへの登録作業を済ませておきましょう。そして、大学、ロースクール時代の成績表、司法研修所の成績等、推薦状を受理してから、同サービスのサイトへ更新するまでに2週間程度の時間を要します。出願締切日の間際になって手続きを試みても、間に合わない。。。といったケースに遭遇しないように注意しましょう。

If you earned your first degree in law from an institution outside of the United States, you may purchase the Document Assembly Service (DAS) to have your letters of recommendation, unauthenticated transcripts, English proficiency score(s), and electronic applications forwarded to participating law schools. In addition to DAS, you may need to purchase the International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service (ITAES), which is offered in cooperation with the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO). This includes the authentication and evaluation of transcripts/mark sheets, copies of degrees/diplomas, degree and graduation certificates, and rank statements so that US law schools better understand your academic credentials.

学校説明会の活用について

前回の投稿でもご案内しましたが、今月はこれまで以上に学校説明会が開催されます。その説明会へ参加すること自体は情報収集の観点から大切な役割を果たしますが、実際のところ、卒業生や在校生からお話を聞く際にはどのような質問を投げかけていますか？

予想されるトピックとしては主に、教授陣とのインタラクション、クラスメイト間同士の交流度合、課外活動（クラブ活動も含む）、卒業後のキャリア形成と学んだことの接点等が挙げられるでしょうか。そして在校生に対しては、1) 個人的に満足しているところ、（外部の）第三者に誇れるところ、さらには2)改善を要するポイントなどについても確認していきましょう。

自分がその学校の在校生となった暁には、そうした改善取り組み作業をスクール側と協力することも、自らの貢献になりますね。そのためにも、在校生や卒業生を通じて事前に情報を入手しておかなければなりませんね。

卒業生が推薦者になること

出願シーズンも折り返し地点となる8月を迎えました。2ndラウンドでの出願を目指すMBA受験生にとっては、IELTS, TOEFLやGMATといった試験対策に向けて余念がない時期であると察し致します。この時期に以外と多い相談内容として、推薦者の人選、推薦状に使用するネタ（エピソード）の選定といったものが見られます。

そうした中、本日は「卒業生が推薦者になること」について考えてみたいと思います。

卒業生に推薦状を書いてもらうためには特別の手順を踏むのでは・・・と考えがちですが、他の推薦者へ作成を依頼すると同様に推薦者と共有できるエピソードを用意しましょう。そのエピソードを通じて、自らの強み、秀でた能力、スキル、さらには将来性等を読み取らせて入学後におけるスクールコミュニティーへの貢献度合いを示します。

そうした一方で、その推薦者とは「学校のカルチャーに適しているからこそ貢献できるポイント」を書き加えてもらうように考えてはいかがでしょうか。卒業生の推薦状内容に対して効力を与えるためにも、そうした「学校カルチャーとのフィット感」以外に、ポストMBAのキャリアプラン実現に向けた教育コンテンツ（リソース）とのフィット感等も共有しておきましょう。

Personal Statement
Your Personal Statement should describe your background, academic interests, the program of study you wish to follow and your reasons for doing so. You should prepare this statement without assistance from others. The format of the statement should not exceed three double-spaced pages using a 12-point font with standard margins. We will not accept a résumé or curriculum vitae in place of the statement.

同校に限らずPersonal Statementのお題が発表された際には、それを噛み砕いて考えてみましょう。

・Academic background
・Professional background
・LLM課程への進学決定付けた理由
・Professioal Career Objectives
・Columbia LLM.課程へ進学する理由

そして、Academic bacgroungの内容を考える際にも、常にProfessional backgroundとの「つながり」を結ぶようにコンテンツのまとめかたに注意を払っていきましょう。ここでの「つながり」とは、「世の中に役に立つため、」、「○○という仕事に魅力感じたため」といった具体性が伴わないコンテンツの使用は避けます。まずは大学時代にゼミを通じて学んだこと、思ったこと、感じたことなど諸々の情報をリストアップするところスタートしていきましょう。「大学時代に学んだこと」と「就職先での仕事内容」とが必ずしも一致するとは限りませんが、「繋がらないので・・・」とそのまま放置していては、いつになってもPersonal Statementは作る状態には至りません。その「繋がり」を自分の言葉で語るべく、その当時の自分が何を考え、どう思って、その行動をとったのだろうか？という観点から見つめ直してみましょう。
