【2020年入学用 推薦状課題】:Harvard Business School

同校のエッセイ課題の内容を踏まえますと、この時期より推薦状課題に対して使用するエピソードも同時に考えておくことをお勧めします。
https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/application-process/Pages/default.aspx

You will need to have two recommendations submitted online by the application deadlines.

Recommenders will be asked to fill out a personal qualities and skills grid and answer our two additional questions (see below).

How do the candidate’s performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)

Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (250 words)

以下の文面には、推薦状の人選ポイント、推薦者のステータスと人選との関係性について述べられていますのでご一読ください。

Use your best judgment on who you decide to ask – there is no set formula for who should be your recommenders. We know it is not always possible to have a direct supervisor write your recommendation – we would not want you to jeopardize your current position for the application process. Look at the questions we are asking recommenders to complete. Find people who know you well enough to answer them. This can be a former supervisor, a colleague, someone you collaborate on an activity outside of work. How well a person knows you should take priority over level of seniority or HBS alumni status.

【2020年入学用 Essay課題】:Harvard Business School

先日の出願締め切り日に続き、エッセイ課題が発表されました。昨年度と同様の課題内容です。
https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/Pages/from-the-admissions-director.aspx

Our one required essay will remain the same for the upcoming year: “As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA Program?” (no word limit)

同スクールが求める人材は以下のように述べられています。
https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/Pages/who-are-we-looking-for.aspx

“Habit of Leadership, Analytical Aptitude and Appetite, and Engaged Community Citizenship”

■ Habit of Leadership
Leadership may be expressed in many forms, from college extracurricular activities to academic or business achievements, from personal accomplishments to community commitments. We appreciate leadership on any scale, from organizing a classroom to directing a combat squad, from running an independent business to spearheading initiatives at work. In essence, we are looking for evidence of your potential.

■ Analytical Aptitude and Appetite
Harvard Business School is a demanding, fast-paced, and highly-verbal environment. We look for individuals who enjoy lively discussion and debate. Our case and field-based methods of learning depend upon the active participation of prepared students who can assess, analyze, and act upon complex information within often-ambiguous contexts. The MBA Admissions Board will review your prior academic performance, the results of the GMAT or GRE, and, if applicable, TOEFL iBT and/or IELTS, and the nature of your work experience. There is no particular previous course of study required to apply; you must, however, demonstrate the ability to master analytical and quantitative concepts.

■ Engaged Community Citizenship
So much of our MBA experience – including the case method, section life, and student-organized events – requires the active collaboration of the entire HBS community. That’s why we look for students who exhibit the highest ethical standards and respect for others, and can make positive contributions to the MBA Program. The right candidates must be eager to share their experiences, support their colleagues, and teach as well as learn from their peers.

We want applicants who have these traits (Habit of Leadership, Analytical Aptitude & Appetite, & Engaged Community Citizenship), as well as bring a variety of skills, accomplishments and aspirations. In each class, we create a dynamic environment that mirrors the breadth and depth of our world economy. Our promise to our faculty and to every student here is to create a class of 900 students who come from as many different backgrounds and perspectives as possible.

The objective of this presentation is to help you better understand MBA Admission Essay Questions in order to write effective essays and gain admission.   While examples will be drawn from the M7+INSEAD+LBS, the objective of this presentation is that you learn how to effectively analyze the essay questions for any school.

Part 1: What is an Essay Question?  Isn’t an essay question just one the school defines as an essay?  Well, actually no. This might seem like a strange conclusion but given that some applications include video essays and very extensive application form content, the answer is less obvious.  For our purposes an essay will be considered any application component except the resume, which is prepared by the applicant, and requires an interpretive and not just fact-based answer. Such an inclusive definition is useful when things like video essays and extended application form content are used instead of and/or in addition to essays.

Part 2: Primary Types of Essay Questions. In this section we will look at the types of essay questions using actual examples. Types covered will include goals, accomplishment, failure, leadership, personality, and contribution. The objective will be for you to understand how to identify and address a range of questions.

Part 3: The Essay Set. In this section we will see how an entire set of questions connects together to understand that that an essay component never is isolated but always part of a bigger whole.  We will compare two different essay sets. The objective will be for you to understand how to build a complete portrait of yourself that is focused on what each school is looking for.

Part 4: Trends in Essay Questions for 2018-2019. In this section we will look at the current trends. In particular we will look at video essays and shorter essay sets. The objective will be for you to know how to handle these trends effectively.

Part 5: Questions. I want to leave plenty of time for questions, so please be ready to ask questions related to the above, your individual concerns, or essay questions that I will not have covered.

No more Round 3 for the HBS Class of 2021

2018/5/15付のHBS Admissions Blogからの抜粋です。
https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/Pages/from-the-admissions-director.aspx

For these reasons, Round 3 will no longer be an option. The spring “2+2 Round” for college seniors seeking deferred admission will remain.
So, mark your calendars! To be considered for the Harvard Business School Class of 2021, you need to apply in either Round 1 (September 5, 2018) or Round 2 (January 4, 2019). We have no preference between the two rounds — truly.
We hope that you will apply to HBS!

Looking Ahead to the Class of 2021

We are taking a small break in our Round 3 / 2+2 programming to look ahead with you to the Class of 2021—this is for those of you who will be applying in the next “application year”.
We’ve set application deadlines for Round 1 (September 5, 2018) and Round 2 (January 3, 2019), so I wanted to put those on your radar now. You can start working on the Class of 2021 application in early June 2018 when we open up the application, but in the meantime feel free to start thinking about the one required essay, which has remained the same:
“As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA Program?”
On Wednesday, June 6th, we will hold an optional webinar walking through each element of the application.
For those of you who recently applied for our 2+2 program, we are really enjoying getting to know you through your applications! I will post again on Friday, April 20 to let you know specifics about interview invitations and other important dates. And, for our Class of 2020 Round 3 interviewees, we can’t wait to meet you soon.

■ Round 1
Application due: September 5, 2018
Decision released: TBA

■Round 2
Application due: January 3, 2019
Decision released: TBA
