December 15Priority application submission deadline. On or before this date candidates should have submitted their Basic Information Form electronically to the Law School and the following items to the LSAC LLMCAS: application for admission, personal statement, and resume.  Candidates may apply after December 15. They do not need to ask permission to do this. They should understand, however, that they assume the risk that most admission decisions will have been made by the time their applications have been completed and reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee. Candidates who do apply after December 15 should include with their personal statements an explanation about why they did not apply before the deadline.

January 15Priority application completion deadline. Although most applicants will have completed their applications (application for admission, personal statement, resume, transcripts, TOEFL/IELTS scores, and letters of recommendation) by the December 19 deadline, candidates whose applications are completed between December 15 and January 15 will receive full application review before decisions are sent out on February 15. Applications completed after January 15 will be fully reviewed once they are complete, but those candidates should understand that, as a practical matter, the later we review a completed application, especially if it is substantially later, the less likely we will be able to offer admission. This timing varies from year to year, and it is impossible to predict ahead of time when we will have to stop offering admission to candidates.

LL.M. students take most of their classes together with UNC law students, sharing their international perspective with and learning American law from UNC faculty and students. Legal areas in which LL.M. students may concentrate their law studies at UNC include:

  • Corporate and Commercial Law
  • Banking and Finance
  • Intellectual Property
  • Environmental Law
  • Health Care Law
  • Human Rights and Civil Rights Law
  • International and Comparative Law
  • Public Law and Regulation

In addition to the UNC law curriculum, LL.M. students may also receive instruction outside the law school, taking advantage of opportunities in other departments on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. The LL.M. program encourages collaboration between its students and University faculty and students, particularly those in business school and international studies.

Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University
https://law.vanderbilt.edu/prospective-students/llm-program-/llm-admissions-process.php

Applications for the LL.M. may be submitted from September 1 through April 30.

LL.M. Selection Process

Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis. We make decisions on individual applications as quickly as possible, although the time required may vary from case to case. We evaluate each application thoroughly, reflecting our belief that the quality of the educational environment at Vanderbilt Law School benefits from considering a broad range of information contained in each application.

Note: Vanderbilt Law does not have a minimum score requirement. In general, we look for a TOEFL score of at least 100 or IELTS score of 7.5. We also look at the breakdown for listening, speaking, writing and reading to ensure that all indicate a high level of English proficiency. However, a lower score in one area or overall does not automatically preclude an applicant from consideration for Vanderbilt’s LLM program. Applicants whose test score(s) falls below the targets set forth above, should feel free to highlight any specific issues in the personal statement portion of their application they feel might strengthen their application in this regard, such as time spent in English language environments, work done in English, English language publications, etc.

★ TOEFL vs IELTS

Applications, including all supporting materials, must be received by February 1 (April 1 for S.J.D. applicants). Applications that are not complete on this date will be reviewed on a space-available basis at the discretion of the Graduate Committee. Applicants are notified by email when their applications are complete. If you have not received an email from us telling you that your application is complete, you should not assume it is complete. Candidates are strongly advised to apply early in the fall semester of the year prior to the one for which they seek admission. Although completed LL.M. applications are not due until Feb. 1, the Graduate Committee follows a “rolling admissions” policy and offers of admission may be made before the Feb. 1 deadline. Therefore, it is advantageous to apply early.

Interview:
Members of the admissions team invite some applicants to interview over the phone or via Skype. These interviews are initiated by our staff. We also sponsor student-led tours every weekday while classes are in session, and encourage applicants to reach out to the Graduate Studies Office with any questions they may have about UVA Law or the admissions process.  For more information, see Visiting the School.  We also welcome prospective students to visit the Law School, sit in on classes and meet with the director or another member of the Graduate Committee. Such visits must be arranged in advance by contacting the Graduate Studies Office.

Application Methods

We’re pleased to accept applications prepared in any of the formats described below.  Applicants should use the method most convenient for them. However, applicants who wish to use a credit card to pay for the application fee must apply via LSAC.

Hardcopy Applications are available by request or by downloading the application in pdf format. You will need Acrobat Reader (Version 6.0 or higher will work best). The application fee must be included in the form of a check or money order (see above), unless the fee was waived.

Online Applications can be submitted via LSAC in combination with LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service.

The Credential Assembly Service of LSAC is intended to save you time and money if you wish to apply to a number of U.S.,  Canadian or Australian graduate law degree programs. You will only need to obtain your transcripts and other required credentials once in order to make them available for all of your applications. For a registration fee of $75 (U.S.) plus $25 per law school, LSAC will collect and distribute your university records and TOEFL scores. You may additionally choose to have your non-American university credentials evaluated and authenticated by LSAC. You will be able to use these services to apply to participating U.S. and Canadian law schools for a period of five years. For additional information about this service, go to http://lsac.org/llm/default.asp.

UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley LL.M. Program (Traditional Track:
https://www.law.berkeley.edu/academics/llm/application-admission/

The deadline to apply is January 10, 2018.

Berkeley Law requires that applicants submit their application online through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) website. The LSAC is an independent, nonprofit organization that manages admissions for the majority of American law schools.

If you do not have an LSAC account, you may register for one here. The free basic LSAC account allows you to search for law schools, view application requirements and save a list of schools and programs.

There are two basic steps to applying via LSAC:

    1. Submitting your electronic application form (includes CV, personal statement and application fee), and
    2. Submitting your supporting documents (transcripts, recommendation letters).

We recommend that you complete and submit your electronic application form even if your supporting documents are not ready; this enables Berkeley Law to see that you have begun the application process and will create a record for you in our system. Once you have submitted your application form and paid the application fee, you will use LSAC’s LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (CAS) to submit your supporting documents.

1. Current Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
2. Personal Statement
3. Official Transcripts

Discuss any matters relevant to your ability to succeed in law school and the practice of law, and any attributes, experiences, or interests that would enable you to make a distinctive contribution to UCLA and the legal profession. The personal statement should be typed double-spaced in 12-point font, and should not exceed three pages in length. When completing your online application through LSAC, please follow the instructions to attach an electronic copy of your personal statement to your application.

また、any matters relevant to you ability to succeed in (UCLA) law school and the practice of law, and any attributes, experiences, or interestsとありますが、Personal Statementの段落を構成する際は、必要に応じて大学やロースクール時代の経験、さらには会社、事務所、省庁での勤務実績やその経験から得たことをカバーすることで上記Personal Statementの設問に対して回答することになります。

Columbia University

Columbia LL.M.
http://www.law.columbia.edu/admissions/graduate-legal-studies/llm-program/application-instructions/application-deadlines

Applicants for admission to our 2018-2019 LL.M. Program, except those who are in the final year of their first law degree and reapplicants who were not granted admission, have the option of applying through the Early Review Program. The advantage of applying early is that you will most likely have a decision by late December. We encourage early applications from those who feel they have compiled their strongest possible application by November 1, 2017. To be considered under the Early Review Program, you must:

Submit your online application by the early review deadline;

Submit your transcripts, TOEFL scores, and letters of recommendation to LSAC one week in advance of the November 1 deadline so that they have time to process your full CAS report and forward it to us during the Early Review period; and

Specify that you wish to be considered for early review by answering “yes” to the Early Review question in the “Application Deadlines” section of this application.

If you do not meet the above criteria, including taking the TOEFL test by November 1, 2017, we will automatically defer your application for consideration as part of the regular admission cycle.

We will provide a decision for early applicants by the end of December. Applicants will be admitted, rejected, or deferred to the regular admission cycle. If you are admitted through the Early Review Program, you will not be required to withdraw your applications to other LL.M. programs. Admitted candidates will be required to notify us by April 2, 2018 of their intention to matriculate.

Regular Application Deadline

The Columbia online application, available through LSAC, and all application materials for the CAS Report, including supporting documents, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, must be postmarked to LSAC by December 19, 2017. Applicants who are required to submit a TOEFL score (see our Application Components page for more information) must take the test no later than December 19, 2017 in order to be considered for admission for the 2018-2019 LL.M. Program.

Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, in most cases no later than late April. Rolling admissions means that we evaluate applications randomly; the date you submitted your application often has no bearing on when you will receive a decision. Some candidates will have a decision in early January, others in late April. (If you submit your application well before the December 19 deadline, for example, you will not necessarily have an earlier decision.) If you have not yet received a decision, it most likely means that the Committee simply has not yet reviewed your application (so you should not worry!). We strive to give every candidate a decision by the end of April.
